The star has given the full amount of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the UK's grassroots concert spaces.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the top album of the previous year.

He has decided to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The money helped venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges arising from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that helped artists and fans.

"The idea that revenue from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved several small stages in the South East, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the community ownership program, which is funded by Arts Council England and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
